About Me

Let's pretend that we are in college, and it's the first recitation of a new semester, and your professor says "Let's get to know one another! Tell us your name and one interesting fact about yourself!!" in that sort of Kindergarten teacher kind of way, to make it seem way more awesome than it really is. No, on second thought, let's not, because I don't know about you, but every time I had to do that I couldn't think of anything more interesting to say than "My name is Katira, I...am a junior...and I....ummm...well, I make really good mac and cheese." OK, maybe I never said that exactly, but for some reason I could never think of the interesting things about myself on the spot like that, and thought of a whole bunch about 2.6 seconds after I was done speaking. Since I didn't usually make it a habit to stand up in the middle of class and list my more interesting attributes to redeem my appeal as a potential as a group member or study partner, I kept these things to myself. Not the case here. Here I have time on my side, and an audience that is about a thousand times more likely to be paying attention and/or awake (at least I think so, if you made it this far).
Incidentally, my mac and cheese is not too shabby...

So here we go! (College professor as Kindergarten teacher voice and all that...)

Who are you?
I am Katira. I am 25 years old, and I live in Colorado Springs, CO (for the time being). Don't worry, it gets more exciting after this.

This is me.

I have the best family in the entire world. I know everyone says that, but I challenge you to find a better one. I have fantastic parents, two brothers and a sister, and they appear in my blog whether they like it or not (they do).
I am almost finished with my Master's in Elementary Education (despite an undergrad in Integrative Physiology and Spanish), and it has been a wonderful journey.
I also attended the University of Food Network and Other Such Channels, majoring in Ace of Cakes, Amazing Wedding Cakes, Food Network Challenge, and Cake Boss, minoring in almost every other show where they cook or bake.

Why should I read your blog?
Because it's fun! I am a real person who thinks that baking is a great way to spend my time and caloric intake. I would love for people (people I don't know) to think I am talented enough to be an inspiration or to bake things for their wedding, or their baby shower, or their kid's birthday party. Honestly though, if all I ever get to do is bake birthday cakes for my family or cupcakes for the elementary school book fair, I would be more than happy. This blog is a way for me to share my successes and failures of the baking world with my family, my friends, and hopefully some people from outside my own little world. Please enjoy it! If you laugh once, try a recipe once, or even just think "Oh, that's kinda cool/pretty/yummy-looking/superb" for half a second, then I have done what I came here to do.

Completely unrelated facts about me in no particular order.
(If you've made it this far, you might as well keep reading)
I climb fourteeners with my Mom. So far we have done 12. Sometimes we talk other people into coming with us, but they don't usually want to do it more than once. Weird.
I grew up in Canberra, Australia.
I have been to the Olympic Games 4 times in my life, and plan on going again soon. Not as an athlete, in case there was any confusion.
I am a Potterhead. I might as well come out with it now, because you'll know about it sooner or later.
At risk of losing readers...I don't particularly enjoy chocolate ice cream. Chocolate? Love it. Chocolate cake? Love it. Chocolate frosting? Love it. Chocolate milk? Love it. Chocolate ice cream? Not so much. I mean, if you scoop me some, I'm not going to turn it down, but it is not my frozen treat of choice.
Reading is totally my thing. I love books, to the point where I want one of those totes that says "I like big books and I can not lie" (sing to the tune of Sir-Mix-a-Lot's Baby Got Back).
I'd have to say that my favorite fruit is the raspberry.

How do I contact you?
Email me at katirabakes (at) gmail (dot) com
I will write back to you or answer you on the blog. I promise.

What if I want you to try my recipe/product (most likely in order to blog about it)?
Great! I'd be happy to. Contact me and we can talk.

Still have questions?
Ask! You might even make it on the FAQ page, you lucky ducks.

Proof that I wasn't lying about the fourteener thing...
Me, my sister, and my mom at the summit of Mt. Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado. I'm in the middle.
